L&M Fly-In Outposts

June 2009 L&M Newsletter
L & M June 2009 Newsletter

Dear Fellow anglers,

It has been a while since we have had a few spare minutes to write to all of you with an update in a newsletter. Before we get into the finer details, let's just say this has been another crazy spring this year (weather wise) and we have decided to re run another "May Special" for 2010. We have decided not to call it our May Blow Out Special as for the 2009 season, rather, it's going to be "L & M's Survivor Series Special " for 2010. (reasons later in the newsletter). Are you interested? Certain restrictions will apply, if your group meets the criteria, the price is as low as $900.00 each. Please inquire for further details.

There are 2 parts of the Survivor May Special. Of course, the first part is the special price listed above. The 2nd part is a special drawing. Every person who gets involved in this special will be entered for a FREE trip drawing. June of 2010, a drawing with every person who did the special will be entered to win a free fishing trip for later in 2010 or during 2011 season. So for a quick easy example, 50 total customers take part in the special with L & M, your odds will be 1 in 50 for a free fishing trip for up to 2 people. 2 will be FREE. Subject to availability.

Back to the crazy spring and why we are calling this our May survivor series special. Weather!!! Who says we have global warming needs to come to NW Ontario. Most Mays can be very nice for weather but this last year was a cold, wintery spring mix. Wind and even snowy periods, with cold temps we had on certain days. This next statement is not normal but our opening week was not normal, over a foot of snow on the ground at our north lakes. In a couple of days it was melted off and a bit of sun poked through. During the cold snap, water lines to the cabins froze and busted, which had to be fixed as soon as we could and when the temps warmed back above freezing. (another reason for the Survivor Series name special). On a positive note, none of our customers this spring lost their trip due to ice still being on the lakes. We were able to get into all the lakes before the customers arrived to get the camps ready before everyone arrived. Finally the summer has arrived though and starting about the middle of June getting some favorable weather. Let's hope it decides to stick around for a while.

We figure we will run a special to try to give incentive for people to come in May for 2010. Most springs are very pleasant along with being BUG FREE. If you do not like bugs, why not go BEFORE they come out in full force which means coming in May. Fishing is normally very good during May, too. May fishing usually means fishing in shallower water, where the water temps warm up first or in the river areas near the moving water. Slow presentation in your fishing methods helps when the weather is such as we had this spring with the cooler water temps.

Water levels are doing very well up to this point. A couple of the lakes even have or had water over the dock at some point during this spring. Dock at Shabumeni was under the water and now finally can walk on the dock without getting your feet wet. Fawcett is still high, it's on the receding side so hopefully soon the water will be back under the boards to walk on.

The May of 2009, we purposely did not book Otatakan and Fishtrap lakes until early June. We booked them in early June to give us time to finish our "work" projects before customers arrived this season. In Otatakan, the composting toilet was installed along with all the plumbing and the protective cover building for the composting unit. The toilet is in the cabin but the actual unit is plumbed outside. Fishtrap was completed June 4th ready for customers. Just in time for the first group in Fishtrap on June 5th. The cabin looks very nice. A totally new look was designed into this cabin which we feel our customers will like, too. With these remodel projects completed, if anyone who didn't try an outpost trip with L & M because we did not have flush toilets, check out Otatakan Lake to fulfill your needs. Maybe a wives' trip? We do offer specials to the wives. Our first group in Otatakan this year, brought a couple of ladies along and let's say, they did enjoy the indoor toilet.

Fishtrap's newly remodeled cabin does not have a flush toilet like Otatakan, but is a very nice cabin to stay in while resting in between catching those feisty small mouth bass. We did a different layout on how the cabin is inside which we think will is a nice change.

The airplanes are running fine. Our mechanic found an internal cracked case in one of the engines this spring, so we needed to replace the engine early in May. (unexpected "ouch" to the pocket book) We appreciate a couple of groups who worked with us around the revised flight schedule during this brief period as we had just the one beech to fly our guests with while this was being worked out.

This past year we have noticed 2 spectrums in peoples packing for the fishing trips. Many of our groups have been reading and following our suggested packing lists on how to pack for the flight while some obviously do not. We strongly suggest reading these suggested items for packing as it makes loading the airplanes much easier on everyone. There's a limit to how much can be brought and we appreciate everyone who packs accordingly to our lists to avoid possible extra charges in getting your gear to the lake or delays to your scheduled trip. Some of the things that are brought just are not necessary.

Some groups really need to watch the weight of the gear to fly in. Get together and plan who is bringing what. No need to have two or three of everything. We do want to thank those who do take the time and effort to comply with out suggested packing ideas.

The fishing so far this spring has been tempermental. During the harsh weather, it seemed like the fishing was good one day and tough the next day. Seemed like the fishing followed the weather patterns, on the nice days they would bite. Or it could have meant during the nasty days the fishermen spent more time in the cabins rather than fishing? This last week, the reports are picking up to be more consistent. Also, the spawn was late this spring which brought the post spawn timing in right during our season.

We hope each and every one has a good summer .and..until our next newsletter, remember, if anyone is looking for a trip yet for 2009 or planning ahead for 2010, feel free to let us know to discuss details and rates. Keep in mind if you never fished with L & M and were referred by someone who has, we offer the direct referral discount. Details listed on our web site. It would be our pleasure to discuss further details concerning your requests. Let's keep our fingers crossed the fuel/gas prices doesn't repeat last summer's trend. It sure seems to be aiming that way again.

We will not get started about this topic..

Stay in touch.

God Bless.
